Ilya Abayev was born on August 2, 1981. He started attending Chertanovo Football School in Moscow, where his father worked.

Once, when Ilya was a teen, Russian national U-18 team and FC Torpedo Moscow coaches came to see a game. Soon after this, the goalkeeper was invited to join the training camp of the U-18 team and Torpedo Reserve Team, which he officially joined after graduating the School.

On March 13, 2004 Abayev debuted in the Russian Premier League in the fixture against FC Rostov.

Abayev's next club was Anji. First, Ilya went to Makhachkala on loan, but only to sign a contract a year later. With Anji, Ilya topped the First Division, the then second strongest Russian league.

On December 2010, Ilya moved to Nizhny Novgorod to play 40 games for the local FC Volga. From there, Ilya was selected for the Russian second national team.

In 2013 Abaev moved to Lokomotiv.
