Lokomotiv youth team sustained a defeat to Kuban in a Gameweek 14 match of the Russian football championship.
Kuban and Lokomotiv junior squads entered their week 14 battle sharing the third spot of the tournament table. Therefore, the Railwaymen just had to stay focused entirely on the fixture despite Barinov with Makarov missing from midfield because of their call-up to the first team, while Galanin and Makhatadze were unavailable as well - the two players will only be available Monday upon their return from the FIFA U-17 World Football Cup in Chile.
Another intrigue of the game was that it would bring together the best strikers of the tournament. Yuriy Zavezyon and Artem Galadzhan both ranked top, having scored eight goals each. But, alas for us, Kuban’s skipper went ahead on 17 minutes - Yuriy stripped our defenders off the ball, and Kovalyov was late to react – 1:0.
Having conceded, Loko remained on their track anyway. We possessed the ball almost all the time, but Kuban were reliable in defence and cut short our forwards' runs before the area. On 43 minutes Innokentiy Samokhvalov sent a screamer at Khaikin’s goal. The shot blazed a little over the bar.
The second half looked pretty much the same with Lokomotiv trying to build up attacks. Kuban hit back on counters. The lost possession in midfield on 59 minutes led to the ball ending up in our box, where Mayrovich ran on to it first – 2:0.
Loko’s coaches attempted to liven up the team's play. They replaced the wingers and brought on Ilya Rubtsov to lead the charge but we did not manage to pull back and move up the League standings.
