Six Reasons Why You Should Go To Saransk

On 22 March, Lokomotiv are going to pay the visit to FC Mordovia based in Saransk. We highlight the main destinations in the capital city of the Republic of Mordovia. Pack your bags!

1. National museums.

To help you see some more of Saransk rather than the stadium and the nearby pubs, we recommend you to start your tour around the city with visiting the museums. The city was founded in the XVII century. It has a rich history and there're lots of museums there. We suggest that you focus on two of them. The Mordovian Republican United Museum of Local History named after I.D. Voronin (Moskovskaya Street, 48) exhibits unique artefacts of the ancient Mordva people, old books, stuffed animals and birds inhabiting the region.

All those who are interested in the history of the Great Patriotic War are welcome to the Memorial Museum of the Military and Labour Exploits in Sovetskaya street. There you will find not only the documents of different kind, uniforms and tools of the war time, but also the military vehicles exhibited under the open sky.

2.National cuisine.

Vandolk yakstele viy, ofton madyat, young girl's breasts... Don't be afraid, these are the names of the traditional dishes of the Mordovian cuisine. You can taste them in many local restaurants, for example, in cafes 'Slavyanka' and 'Twelve Chairs'. 'Vandolk yakstele viy' is a beet with slices of goat cheese, 'ofton madyat' are beef or pork croquettes in the shape of a bear paw. Well, and 'young girl's breasts' are the cakes of the proper shape.

3. 2018 World Cup venue

Saransk is one of the host cities for 2018 World Cup. The Jubilee Stadium's construction is on its early stage but you can check out its whereabouts and personally 'control' the construction. The stadium is situated near the Insar river floodlands. Its estimated costs are 17 bln rubles (about €265,169,400).

4. Saint Fyodor Ushakov cathedral.

That's the main sights and the most popular tourist destination in the city. It's located in Sovetskaya street, 53. A huge cathedral of the capacity of 3,000 people
was built several years ago but has become the hallmark of the city. The cathedral is named after the Russian admiral Fyodor Ushakov who was consecrated in 2001. In 1817, Ushakov died in one of the Mordovian villages.

5. Pushkin park

If the game is still some time ahead, and the weather is good (at least that's what the forecast says) you can have a good time in the local Pushkin park established in 1846. To celebrate the 100-year jubilee of Pushkin, in 1899 the park was given the poet's name. Emperor Nikolai II approved the installation of Pushkin's bust on the park's territory. It's one of the most popular recreational spots among the locals. It has everything for a proper rest: side-shows, little ponds, dance floors, children's playgrounds, cafés and restaurants.

6. Drive-in theater

If you drive, we suggest that you watch a movie in the Kinopole drive-in. It's in Shkolnaya street, the tickets are priced at 250 rubles. The cinema runs two movies a day, at 20:00 and 24:00, it serves pop-corn and the original vanilla Cola.
