Match background

Fourth-placed Lokomotiv Moskva host Group E leaders Galatasaray on UEFA Europa League Matchday 3 knowing
that victory will move them level on points with the Turkish side at the halfway stage.
• After drawing 1-1 with Marseille in Moscow, Lokomotiv were defeated 2-0 at Lazio last time out, while Galatasaray,
who beat the Italian side 1-0 in Istanbul on Matchday 1, kept hold of top spot with a goalless draw in southern France.
Since Matchday 2 the Russian club have parted company with head coach Marko Nikolić.
Previous meetings
• The clubs have each won two of their four previous UEFA encounters, one at home and one away.
• In the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League first group stage Galatasaray won 2-0 at Lokomotiv on Matchday 1 but the
Russian side prevailed 2-1 in the Istanbul return, current Lokomotiv interim coach Dmitri Loskov scoring the visitors'
first goal, and would go through to the second group stage at the Turkish side's expense. Then as now, Galatasaray's
coach was Fatih Terim.
• The teams were paired again in the UEFA Champions League group stage three seasons ago, again with Terim in
charge of the Turkish club, and this time neither made further progress, Galatasaray again beating Lokomotiv on
Matchday 1 – 3-0 in Istanbul – but then going down 2-0 in Moscow. They were the clubs' only victories in the section,
Galatasaray finishing third with four points and Lokomotiv fourth with three.
• Lokomotiv's home record against Turkish clubs in UEFA competition is W2 D2 L2 with no defeats in the last three
matches, while Galatasaray's record in Russia, indeed Moscow, is W1 D1 L3, the matches against Lokomotiv their
only ones there this century.
Form guide
Lokomotiv
• After three successive seasons in the UEFA Champions League, in each of which they finished fourth in their group,
Lokomotiv are back in the UEFA Europa League after a 2020/21 domestic season in which they finished third in the
league under Nikolić, nine points behind champions Zenit, and also lifted the Russian Cup for the fourth time in seven
years – and ninth in all – with a 3-1 victory over Krylya Sovetov Samara in the final.
• This is Lokomotiv's fourth appearance in the UEFA Europa League group stage, and they have qualified for the
knockout phase on each of the previous three occasions – in 2011/12, 2015/16 and 2017/18, the last two as group
winners. Four seasons ago they went further than ever before, reaching the round of 16, only to be heavily beaten by
eventual winners Atlético de Madrid (0-3 a, 1-5 h).
• The Russian club's home record in the UEFA Europa League group stage is W5 D2 L3, with one defeat in each of
the three previous campaigns.
Galatasaray
• Runners-up to Beşiktaş in the 2020/21 Turkish Süper Lig by the narrowest of margins, Galatasaray were unable to
join their Istanbul rivals in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage as they were overwhelmed by PSV
Eindhoven in the second qualifying round (1-5 a, 1-2 h). However, Terim's side ensured an autumn of UEFA Europa
League involvement by subsequently defeating Saint Johnstone (1-1 h, 4-2 a) and Randers (1-1 a, 2-1 h).
• Ousted by Rangers in the play-offs of last season's UEFA Europa League (1-2 a), Galatasaray are featuring in the
competition's group stage for only the second time, their debut having come in the inaugural 2009/10 season, when,
under coach Frank Rijkaard, they topped their group before losing to eventual winners Atlético in the round of 32 (1-1
a, 1-2 h). The 1999/2000 UEFA Cup winners have appeared twice more in the round of 32 since then, in 2015/16 and
2018/19 – after transferring from the UEFA Champions League – but also lost those knockout ties, to Lazio and
Benfica respectively.
• Galatasaray's away record in the UEFA Europa League is W6 D7 L4. Their clean sheet at Marseille was just their
second in their last 11 away games in the competition.
Links and trivia
• Terim is in his fourth spell in charge of Galatasaray. He ended his first by guiding Galatasaray to victory in the
1999/2000 UEFA Cup.
• Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera started all of Uruguay's five matches at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in
Russia, though none of those matches took place in Moscow. Uruguay won their final group game 3-0 against a
Russian side in which current Lokomotiv striker Fedor Smolov featured as a substitute.
• Lokomotiv are one of six reigning domestic cup winners appearing in the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League group
stage.
• While there are no former UEFA Europa League winners in this season's group stage, Galatasaray are one of five
clubs involved that have lifted the trophy in its former guise as the UEFA Cup; PSV Eindhoven (Group B), Napoli (C),
Eintracht Frankfurt (D) and Bayer Leverkusen (G) are the others.
