Failed to Hold On to Victory

Lokomotiv and Ural drew in Gameweek 15 of the Russian Premier League.

As we prepared for the fixture with Ural, a unique object arrived to Lokomotiv club’s museum. It was the USSR Cup, which our team won in 1936 and in 1957. The first visitors have already seen the trophy and taken pictures with it. The Cup will be on exhibit up to December 5.

Lokomotiv lined up to face Ural with only one defensive midfielder. Igor Denisov took up his usual slot, while Maicon, Samedov, Miranchuk and Fernandes formed the front four.

The opening minutes were not very creative, but closer to the middle of the half Lokomotiv gained momentum, and it looked like the team would definitely find the net at some point. The first chance to score was wasted by Maicon after Samedov found him with a through pass at the spot but the Brazilian missed.

Corluka and Pejcinovic tried luck taking dead balls. Before the interval, the match also saw long range efforts by Vitaliy Denisov, Kasaev and Fernandes. All in all, the Railwaymen got seven shots in the first 45 minutes, but none of them converted into a goal.

For the entire second half the Red-Greens continued on the offensive. The onslaught started with Fernandes’ powerful screamer crashing into the crossbar. Then Igor Denisov took the low road - the ball went inches wide.

Midway through the second half, Syomin decided to field Galadzhan, who was to make his debut for the main team. Right away, Artyom joined in an attack which could have proven effective if only the other side’s defenders did not block Fernandes’ kick following the debutant’s pass.

Lokomotiv pressure yielded result four minutes before the conclusion. Pejcinovic drove in a cross made by Fernandes. Despite Loko’s overwhelming dominance, we failed to hold on to victory. In stoppage time Fidler sent the ball into the top corner from long range and drew it 1:1.
